What is a Heart-Lung Machine?

A heart lung machine does the work of both the heart and the lungs. They pump and oxygenate the blood during many different procedures including open-heart surgery. They are also called heart bypass machines or cardiopulmonary bypass machines (CPB). These medical devices are operated by perfusionists. These machines mechanically circulate and oxygenate the blood for the body while bypassing the heart and lungs to maintain perfusion to the other organs and tissues so the surgeon can work in a bloodless field.
